In 1968, Mexico outbid other cities vying for the honor, specifically Buenos Aires, Lyon and Detroit, when the bidding started in 1963. The Mexican Olympic games was the only Olympics where the games were held in Latin America, and only the second ever Game hosted outside the U.S.A., Europe or Australia.
